Celebrating the life of

George E. Worthy

June 27, 1930 - September 25, 2014

George E. Worthy

George Eugene Worthy, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to be with The Lord on September 25, 2014.  George served as a First Lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and enjoyed a 33-year career with Eastern Air Lines, retiring as a Captain. He often remarked on his good fortune at having a career he really loved.

He was also active in his community and church, serving 55 years as a teacher and deacon, the last 26 years at First Baptist Church of Savannah.

Other passions included golf - which he played every chance he could - basketball, country music, Mexican food (with margaritas, of course!), jamocha milkshakes, competitive card games, old westerns, biking the trails of Skidaway Island and across Belgium - and he could cut a rug on the dance floor! A carpenter and handyman, he worked on cars and fixed everything around the house all of his life. He made us laugh with his offbeat sense of humor and silliness. One of the things he was most proud of was "A United States Marine," a book he wrote about the late Gunnery Sergeant William C. Sutton Jr.

George was married to his soulmate and love of his life, Marion Mills Worthy, for 60 years. A day did not go by that he didn't tell her many times how much he cherished her.

He is survived by Marion and his three daughters, Cathy Lynne Worthy, Jan Marie Phillips, and Elizabeth Caroline Powell; sister, Nell Youngblood; sons-in-law James Vincent and Jeff Phillips; almost son-in-law Mark Godfrey; and their families. As a grandfather, he took special interest in his five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and was a positive and influential figure in the lives of grandchildren George, Sara, Amanda, Adam, and Aubrey; and great-grandchildren Emily, Aurora, and Jessie.

He was one in a million, loved by all, and will be sorely missed by family and friends.

While we never met George, Caroline's father, we just love Caroline and our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family. It is so nice to see the pictures and see what a beautiful family they had. While this is a time of mourning the loss don't forget the memories and celebration of the wonderful life he had and the legacy he left behind. They knew what they were doing in raising girls, as Caroline is one of the most genuine of individuals that we've met. Our hearts go out to all the family. Love and prayers to you all.
